More than half of EU businesses are innovation-active

51% of all enterprises in the EU reported that they had some form of innovation activity during the years 2020 to 2022, according to the Community Innovation Survey (CIS). The CIS reports about product and process innovation in businesses in the EU.

The latest CIS shows that Belgium had the highest share of innovation-active enterprises (70%), followed by Greece (66%) and Germany (63%). By contrast, the lowest shares of enterprises with innovation activity were observed in Romania (9%), Bulgaria (26%) and Hungary (30%).

Share of innovation-active enterprises higher in large than in small companies

During the period 2020 to 2022, large enterprises with 250 or more employees were more likely to have innovation activities (78%) than medium-size companies of 50 to 249 employees (64%) and small enterprises with 10 to 49 employees (47%).
